The love affair between the two tennis professionals Ajla Tomljanovic and Matteo Berrettini has been seeking attention since US Open 2019 in September. The Croatian-born Australian tennis player Tomljanovic was seen in Matteo Berrettini’s box during the American Slam.
At Australian Open 2020, a tennis journalist Ubaldo Scanagatta asked Tomljanovic regarding their professional and personal success. By doing so, both Tomljanovic and the journalist got engaged in sardonic conversation, as he associated Ajla as Berrettini’s fiancé, and the girlfriend Ajla denied that.
Ajla Tomljanovic vs Ubaldo Scanagatta
When the Italian journalist Ubaldo Scanagatta began questioning Ajla Tomljanovic, she was smiling and laughing out of no reason.
Journalist: This is the second Slam your doing as a fiancé to a tennis player. (Ubaldo was referring to Berrettini and Tomljanovic previously played at US Open 2019 while dating him)
Tomljanovic: Fiancé…what kind of word his that? I think, ‘fidanzata’ is in Italian which means girlfriend, but in English it means fiancé and I’m not his fiancé.
Journalist: Okay, how should I call you…? Girlfriend..?
Tomljanovic: I guess… Ajla would be great too.
Matteo Berrettini’s Success on the ATP Tour
Following that, the journalist gave credit to Ajla Tomljanovic for Matteo Berrettini’s ranking inside the ATP’s top-ten. After the couple started dating Berrettini’s professional career held an upward graph.
He reached the semifinals at US Open and made his top-ten debut on the ATP roster. Also, he became the first Italian player to win a match at ATP World Tour Finals by defeating Dominic Thiem.
At the Australian Open 2020, both Ajla and Matteo are through to the second round with straight-sets victories. The Italian tennis player, Berrettini defeated Andrew Harris and the home-favorite Tomljanovic won over Anastasija Sevastova.
After seeing their professional success on an individual basis, the journalist Ubaldo Scanagatta appreciated “both of you are doing better.” In 2020 Ajla lost to two-top players Karolina Pliskova and Simona Halep in Brisbane and Adelaide respectively.
Up next, World Number 52 Ajla will set up a clash against two-time Grand Slam Garbine Muguruza who survived a scare in the opening round of the Melbourne major. Berrettini will take on the 2018 Aussie Open quarterfinalist Tennys Sandgren in the round of 64.
