Out of the 128 elite players of WTA, World Number 15 Sofia Kenin and unseeded Garbine Muguruza have reached the finals at Australian Open 2020. Both of them have had flourishing two weeks of tennis in Melbourne.
It was difficult for the tennis experts to believe Muguruza to be unseeded at a major tournament. It was all due to her recent slump in the second half of the 2019 season. After the French Open, Muguruza just won a match in Wuhan, China. Later she curtained down the 2019 season with that poor result.
During the off-season, the Spaniard revived her coaching partnership with Conchita Martinez. Since the beginning of 2020 things started falling in place for her. The rejuvenated Muguruza has defeated the top-ten seeds Simona Halep, Kiki Bertens and Elina Svitolina at Australian Open 2020, maybe it was due to the Martinez effect.
Australian Open 2020 Finals – Sofia Kenin vs Garbine Muguruza
Two baseliners, Sofia Kenin and Garbine Muguruza have played each other just once. Their previous meeting was at China Open 2019 and Kenin defeated Muguruza in three sets. At that time, Muguruza was going through a tough period and her graph on the WTA circuit was descending.
The result in Melbourne may not be the same as Bejing. A major final is an unchartered territory for Kenin. Muguruza has previously defeated Serena and Venus Williams in Grand Slam finals. It will be an uphill battle for Kenin to pull off her first Grand Slam.
14th seed Sofia Kenin took out the top-seed Ashleigh Barty is close match semifinal encounter. En route the finals Kenin just played one seeded player and that was Barty. Also, she ended the tennis phenom Coco Gauff’s dream run in Melbourne.
The American hasn’t really played as many tough players as Muguruza did in Melbourne, but she will be a fierce opponent for the Spaniard who will be playing her fourth Grand Slam final (it’s her first Grand Slam final on a hard surface).
Muguruza made a shabby of the tournament in the round one, but patiently eliminated the seeded the players of the Australian Open 2020. The two-time Grand Slam Muguruza will be clinching her third Grand Slam title in Melbourne provided she continues to slam her powerful groundstrokes from the baseline.
Talking about Kenin’s recent achievements, she won Gongzhou and Mallorca Open and also won over Serena Williams in the third round of French Open 2019. Sloane Stephans was the last American to win a Grand Slam at US Open 2017, can Sofia Kenin become the next one and remark the advent of the next generation of American tennis?
