2020 was a special year for Naomi Osaka. After a poor run of form, the Japanese star played her best tennis again to win her 2nd US Open title and third Grand Slam title.

Such an amazing performance has led to her being nominated for the 2021 Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year. After hearing about this news, Osaka was delighted and said,

“For me this is special because Laureus sees the big picture – not just sport on the court or the pitch, but how it can help young people around the world. This is a time that sport can make a big difference.”

The Laureus Awards will be given at the ceremony in May. Some of the other athletes who are nominated in the category for Sportswoman of the Year are – Breanna Stewart, Federica Brignone, and Anna van der Breggen.

Clearly, it will be tough for Osaka to win the award. However, everyone is hoping that she will so that she can add this trophy to her ever-growing collection.

After a great 2020, Osaka has continued her great run of form into 2021. She won her second Australian Open title and she won it quite easily beating nearly all of her opponents in straight sets.

She is in great form and many might say it is possible for her to become the World No. 1 once again. At the moment, she is at No. 2 behind Australian star Ashleigh Barty. She needs 1300 points to go past her and an upcoming event will help her narrow the gap – the Miami Open.
