World No. 3 and the top seed at US Open 2020 Karolina Pliskova suffered a straight-set defeat in New York at the hands of Caroline Garcia. She defeated the top-notch Czech player 6-1, 7-6(2) in the second of the Flushing Meadows Major, and sealed her third-round spot at the American Slam.
Top seed Pliskova performed poorly in the opening set. She just slammed a single winner in the entire set and won a meager number of seven points on serve. In fact, she also exhibited a shabby play on the net.
In the second set, Garcia continued to dominate their encounter. She held the opening break by conformably capitalizing the break point and led by 2-0 in the set.
Pliskova was on the verge of her loss in the second set, however, she managed to bounce and regained her lost serve at 4-4. It marked her mini-comeback in the Round of 64 match at the US Open, but it was not enough to close out the set.
The battle further sailed into the tie-break and with one-way traffic on Caroline’s road, she stunned former Open finalist Karolina at US Open 2020.
On the other courts of WTA, the 13th seed Alison Riske was bested by compatriot Ann Li. Shelby Rogers stunned the 11th seed Elena Rybakina. Donna Vekic battled past against Pliskova’s twin sister, Kristyna Pliskova.
Meanwhile, 30th seed Kristina Mladenovic made a phenomenal start of her second-round match at US Open 2020. After leading by 6-1, 5-1 against 20-year-old Varvara Gracheva from Russia, and having four match points at 5-2 (40-0*) under her belt, she lost 1-6, 7-6(2), 6-0 victory at the New York Major.
Post her loss, she reflected upon her displeasure towards the US Open 2020 bubble.
