When a Surprise Surgery Halted Serena Williams’ Season

After winning the Australian Open 2005, Serena Williams was struggling with her form on the WTA circuit. She suffered abdominal, knee and ankle injuries on separate occasions. Consequently, she missed out on Grand Slam tournaments.

The emergency dental surgery of Serena Williams 

She began her the year 2007 with a World Number 88 ranking, and with a win at Australian Open and then after a flourishing season, she re-entered the top-ten WTA rankings. But the very next year, in 2008, Williams announced an emergency dental surgery.

That year, she lost in the quarterfinals of Aussie Open to Jelena Jankovic and later withdrew from three tournaments which she had scheduled to play. It was all because of her gum injury.

One of the tournaments was the Paris Open where she was the second seed. Also, she missed the tournament in Antwerp, Belgium amid the uncommon surgery.

At that time Serena’s body was fit and there were no such issues regarding her fitness. But the dental surgery in the middle of the season came from nowhere. However, the American ace Williams did not reveal the details of her sudden surgery. 

Former World Number one Serena Williams returned to the WTA circuit at the beginning of March 2008,  and she claimed the title in Bangalore, India and then attained her fifth Miami Open in the USA.

“I am happy to be in India and playing because, to be frank. I am not feeling 100% fit,” she said in Bangalore while receiving her first title after undergoing the uncommon dental surgery. “It took me time to settle down. I started making some errors and the balls were flying.”

In 2008, Serena reached the finals at Wimbledon, pulled off the title at US Open and concluded the year as the World Number two tennis player.
