Tennis Players Who Might Retire in 2020

While we enjoy watching the sport of tennis being played at the highest level by our favorite players, we have to say goodbye at some time or another. Here is the list of 10 tennis players who might retire in 2020.

Ivo Karlovic

The giant from Croatia is one of the tennis players of might retire in 2020. One of the biggest reasons why we feel so is because he is 40 years old. He has played longer than the average life of a tennis player and has had a successful life.

He has hit the most aces in the history of tennis with 13,552 and also holds the record for most aces in a three-set match with 45 aces. Over the course of his career he managed to pick up 8 titles and reach a career-high ranking of world no. 14. 2020 might just be the year he puts an end to his phenomenal career.

Philipp Kohlschreiber

The 36-year old German has had attained some success by winning 8 titles and reaching a career-high ranking of world no. 16. However in the last few years, has not been able to play his best tennis consistently.

This year he started the year well by beating Novak Djokovic in straight sets at Indian wells but towards the latter end of the year suffered early exits at many of the tournaments. The German is not very young and with the coming of NextGen it will be harder for him to compete on the tour which is why we are predicting his retirement in 2020.

Venus Williams

The American has had a successful career by winning a total of 7 grand slams. She has also won 49 singles titles, she trails only her sister among active players on the WTA Tour with most singles titles.

However, her age is not letting her play her best tennis. She is 39 years old and the oldest tennis player on the WTA Tour. While she did manage to reach 2 Grand Slam finals in 2017 she has suffered a number of early exits since the start of 2018. This is why we believe she might retire in 2020.

Feliciano Lopez 

Feliciano Lopez has won 7 titles through out his career and has reached a career-high ranking of world no. 12. He holds the record for most consecutive appearances at Grand Slams which is right now at 71.

He is one of the older players on tour being 38 years old. He has also been appointed the tournament director for The Mutua Madrid Open which is a major commitment. These 2 factors tell us that we might be seeing him hang up his racquet soon and maybe in 2020.

Fernando Verdasco

Fernando Verdasco has won a 7 titles throughout his career and has reached a career-high ranking of world no. 7. He has challenged some of the best tennis players. In the 2009 Australian Open he played a five-hour thriller against fellow countryman Rafael Nadal.

He has not played good tennis in the past few years suffering a number of early exits at tournaments. He is also 36 years old which is not working in his favor which is why he might retire in 2020.

Maria Sharapova

Maria Sharapova being on this list might be a surprise to a lot of people. She is a five-time Grand Slam Champion and she is only 32 years old so why would she retire?

Since her doping ban she has not managed to reach the latter stages of any Grand Slam. This year, a major part of her season was plagued by a shoulder injury which even after recovery acted up in Luxembourg. She has also opted out of playing the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. All of these are signs that she might be hanging up her racquet soon.

Kei Nishikori

After an elbow injury forced him to call off his season in October 2019, Kei Nishikori seems to have lost hope of ever coming back. He is skeptical about his appearance at AO 2020 and he himself said that he is close to retirement.

After being the most successful Asian player winning 12 titles, reaching a career-high ranking of world no. 4  and reaching the finals of the 2014 US Open Kei Nishikori might be retiring in 2020.

Andy Murray

The three-time grand slam winner had hip injury that put him out for nearly 2 years. At the start of this year he announced he would be retiring but after a successful surgery he has hit the courts again. He has shown signs of form by winning the European Open beating Stan Wawrinka in 3 tight sets.

The reason behind why we believe he might retire in 2020 is because of the severity of the injury. The injury made him go through 2 surgeries and  because of this he might not play at the highest level. He is also one of the older players on tour which is not going to work in favor which is why we believe he might retire in 2020.

Serena Williams

She is one of the most decorated female athletes. She has won an astonishing 23 Grand Slam singles titles, 14 Grand Slam doubles titles and has held the world no. 1 spot for 319 weeks. After childbirth, Serena has reached the finals of Majors but has not won them.

 We believe she is staying on the tour only to equal or possibly beat Margaret Court’s record. She might achieve that next year after which she will mostly retire from tennis to spend time with her family.

Roger Federer

He is arguably the most popular player on tour. He has won a record 20 Grand Slams, has held the world no.1 ranking for 310 weeks and has won over 1200 matches. His retirement will be the saddest. A lot of people might be wondering why is he on the list of tennis players who might retire? He is the world no.3 and is still a dominant figure on the ATP Tour.

The reason we have put him on this list is because he is 38 years old. The NextGen of tennis players are arriving and which is why we believe Roger might not be on the tour for much longer. He will have his last shot at a Olympic Gold in 2020 but after that it is likely he is going to retire.
