After Nick Kyrgios won over  Jan-Lennard Struff in the opening match of the ATP Cup 2020, his compatriot Alex De Minaur battled past against World Number seven Alexander Zverev 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-2.

The German lad needed seven set points to take the first set 6-4. However, in his first match of the year, Zverev destroyed his racquet after dropping the second set.

In the second set, Sascha was a break up at 4-2 (and leading a set) but with the Australian fighting for every point and Zverev’s double faults prevailing, the match was taken into the decider. Sailing into the third set the German seemed to lose control over his game.

When De Minaur was double break up against Sascha in the third set

Alex De Minaur came up with brutal hitting in the third set and led by a double break up at 3-0. Later he consolidated for a 4-0 lead against the German team. With support from the crowd and the advantage of playing on the home soil, the Australian seemed unstoppable.

Zverev had no answers to the Australian’s speed and counter-punching skills. It will be pondering time for both Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas before heading into the Australian Open 2020. Meanwhile, it’s all positive signs for Alex De Minaur as he rides on the electric support form the home crowd.

De Minaur destroyed the German in the third set and gave his Australian team their second victory of the day at the ATP Cup 2020.

Kyrgios breakdowns after his win

Before this match, Nick Kyrgios hit 20 aces and raised US$ 4000 for the bush fire victims in Australia. Earlier, the Aussie promised to donate $200 for every ace that he hits. Post his win Kyrgios carried out an emotional interview in the presence of his home crowd.
