In Rogers’ match against Barty, the American found the odds stacked against her. However, she produced an immaculate display of tennis to beat the World No. 1 in three sets to reach the fourth round. The final scoreline read 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (7-5).

In the first Round of 16 match of the day, Bencic and Swiatek engaged in a long tiebreaker for the first set. After a continuous back-and-forth, the Swiss star managed to win the tiebreaker 14-12, and then the second set 6-3 to book her slot in the quarterfinals of the US Open.

When asked about Rogers in the post-match press conference, Bencic mentioned how her performance gave her goosebumps. She said“Yeah, unfortunately I didn’t see the match against Ash Barty, but then of course I saw the highlights and everything. It was very emotional. It was goose bumps feeling, you know, how the crowd supported her, she’s the last American woman standing.”

She also admired the American’s personality, while admitting Rogers merited her shock victory. “For sure it’s a big hope for her and just a very nice story,” said the 24-year-old. “She definitely deserve it. She had some setbacks too with injuries. I’m always very happy if it’s a very nice story, and also she’s a very nice person.”
