Simona Halep Gets an Impressive Win Over Camila Giorgi at US Open 2021 Round 1

12th seed Simona Halep made a strong start to her US Open 2021 campaign with a victory over Camila Giorgi. Despite the unseeded Italian carrying confidence from her shock victory at the National Bank Open, the Romanian powered her way to the second round with a straight sets victory.

The final scoreline read 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).

Giorgi served the first game of the set, holding her serve to take a 1-0 lead. However, Halep also held her service in the very next game, tying the score at 1-1.

The next six games saw both players holding their serve, taking the scoreline in the set to 4-4. The eventual turning point came in the ninth game. With Giorgi serving, Halep raced to a 30-0 lead in the game. Although the Italian pulled a point back, she couldn’t stop the Romanian break her with two consecutive points to go 5-4 up.

In the service game that followed for Halep, the 12th seed made no mistakes in sealing the set. In fact, she fired two aces to seal the game, and the set, 6-4.

Halep vs Giorgi: Set 2

In the second set, Giorgi served the first game of the set once again. The next three games saw both Giorgi and Halep hold their serves, which kept the set score at 2-2. This time, the former World No. 1 broke her Italian opponent’s serve in the fifth game.

With a 3-2 lead, Halep held her serve in her next two service games to go 5-3 up. However, Giorgi put in an impressive effort in the next two games. After holding her serve to trail 5-4, the Italian broke Halep’s serve for the first time in the match to tie the set at 5-5.

While this may have seemed like Giorgi’s way back into the match, Halep quickly dissipated her momentum by breaking her serve in the very next game. Although Giorgi led 15-0, the Romanian won the next four points to take a crucial 6-5 lead.

With the pressure on Giorgi, Halep served for the set in the 12th game. The game went back-and-forth, with Giorgi saving Halep’s first match point at 40-30.

The deuce that followed saw Halep lose her second match point as well, with Giorgi turning the game around and tying the set at 6-6 after sealing a crucial break on her third try. The following tiebreaker saw an intense battle, with the first six points split evenly.

However, Halep took control during Giorgi’s serve, sealing the next four points to win the tiebreaker 7-3, the set and the match. The Romanian will face either Ann Li or Kristina Kucova in the second set.
