“We Have Such a Rich History” – Ashleigh Barty Compliments Australian Tennis After Cincinnati Open Victory

World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty built more momentum towards the upcoming US Open as she clinched the Cincinnati Open in her first WTA tournament since Wimbledon. Although she faced a surprise in finalist Jil Teichmann, she won the final in straight sets 6-3, 6-1.

After sealing her fifth title in 2021, the Australian spoke about the prestige of carrying forward the legacy left by former Australians to play the game. In addition, she also spoke about how Australia’s female players share a strong bond throughout the tour.

Barty is one among a list of successful Australian tennis stars. Although she’s just 25 years old, she looks to be headed for the company of former legends like Margaret Court in the years to come.

The World No. 1 swept Jil Teichmann in straights sets in the final of the Cincinnati Open yesterday. While this showed the form she’s in, she gained immense confidence just a week before the final Grand Slam of the year, the US Open.

Speaking to Prakash Amritraj on the Tennis Channel after her victory, Barty spoke of how Australians always held prominent places in tennis. She said“I think it certainly helps, knowing that there have been other Aussies going through these moments and these kind of experiences. As Aussies, we have such a rich history in tennis, both in the men’s and the women’s side.”

The Wimbledon champion also spoke of how she gets along with her fellow compatriots on the tour. While she admitted they are strong players on the court, she also spoke highly of the joy they share amongst themselves.

“For us girls, I feel like we’ve been strong over a number of years now,” said Barty. “We’re building this nice camaraderie on the road, and it’s nice to see others doing well. And I know, we’re always the first to text each other when someone has a good result in a tournament or has a good win.

“That’s what I love. You get that feeling of connection and family when you’re on the road.”
