Tyson Fury explains what he did differently in the second match against Deontay Wilder that led to the finish.

Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder have met twice in the past. Their first meeting in December 2018 ended in a controversial draw. Their second fight rolled around in February of this year and that was a landslide of a victory in favor of Fury. So what was it that Fury altered and did differently that lead to him absolutely annihilating Wilder in the second fight?

Fury discussed the tactical changes he incorporated in the build-up and even during his first fight with Wilder that helped him secure the WBC heavyweight title.

Fury said, “It’s boxing and everyone is allowed their own opinion… People sometimes look at me and think he’s fat, he’s bald, he’s ugly to watch. But I get the results, don’t I? 32 in a row, I believe now.”

Talking about what he observed from his first fight and the change in approach, Fury said:

“I realized it December 1st, 2018 in round 12. I was doing my thing, boxing, slick, moving, sliding, missing 98% of his punches. When he clipped me both times, I fired back into him. Because when you go down, you can either run away and get clipped again and get knocked out or stand and fight, basically.”

He added, “When you fight fire with fire you can get chinned or chin the person, whatever happens. In my case, I didn’t get chinned, and I saw he didn’t like the pressure I was putting on him. Even in round 12, when I got back up off the floor, he didn’t like what was happening. So I made my mind up from that second. Even after the fight is said, ‘I know how to beat this fellow. I’ve got him, he can’t win. Not unless he lands a massive punch.’ “

Tyson Fury details the changes he made

Talking about his approach and the second meeting, he said, “I didn’t learn this from Sugar Hill or anybody. I knew that was exactly what I was going to do, and I was going to take that fight. I changed trainer, and I was going to do something totally different and I’m going to attack him from round one.

He ended his talk by saying, “In a long career every now and then you have to stand and fight. And it’s a 50-50 fight sometimes. These fights come around where it’s you or him, and it goes down to who wants it more and who’s going to win on the night.

“It doesn’t go on boxing ability or talent or anything. It goes down to guts, pure determination, heart, and bravery. On that night I said it was my time and immortality wins. And I actually batted the biggest puncher in history and didn’t even get a mark on me!”
