The Medium Producer Talks About What Inspired The Game, Silent Hill, And More

Horror games have always been extremely popular as a genre. The amount of detailing that goes into creating the ambiance, visuals, and soundtracks of horror games is really impressive. That is why, when the next-gen titles were revealed, we had our eyes peeled to see what the next-gen has to contribute to this genre in particular. And we found our answer in the upcoming Xbox and PC title, The Medium.

From the house of Bloober Team, this psychological horror title grabbed our attention with its trailer. The game follows Marianne, a medium who can travel to the spirit realm. The entire gameplay is divided between the world of the living and the spirit realm. This is the first time a Bloober title has deviated from its usual first-person gameplay format.

Recently, in an exclusive interview with Gamingbolt, Jacek Zieba, the producer of the game, talked about what inspired this game, and various aspects of this much-anticipated horror title.

Camera angles are one of the most crucial elements while conjuring visual horror, be it a movie or a video game. Gamingbolt asked Zieba about the use of fixed camera angles in the game. Zieba says that the team wanted to recreate the style of iconic horror titles like Silent Hill and Resident Evil. Furthermore, he adds that the fixed camera angles worked best for the dual-reality gameplay.

“Because of fixed camera angles, we were able to introduce an even stronger cinematic feel to the whole game… At the same time, we somehow refer to old-school horror games such as Silent Hill or Resident Evil, which were a great inspiration for us when designing The Medium.”

Speaking of Silent Hill, Zieba also says how much the Bloober Team loves this iconic video game series from Konami. He says that Silent Hill 2 has served as a major inspiration behind the atmosphere of The Medium. Zieba even goes on to call Silent Hill 2 one of the best horror games ever.
“In our opinion, Silent Hill 2 is one of the best horror games ever. Both Silent Hill 2 and the Silent Hill series have always been a great inspiration for us as we approach psychological horrors.

“With The Medium, Silent Hill 2 was one of the main inspirations when it comes to the atmosphere of the game. When playing The Medium, players who are familiar with the Silent Hill series should experience similar themes and aesthetics in our game, especially in the context of the overall atmosphere.”
