Italian tennis player Matteo Berrettini was up against World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the US Open 2021. Similar to their previous two meetings this season, it was the Serb who emerged victoriously. Interestingly, in the post-match press conference, the Italian was talking on the GOAT debate involving Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic.

When Matteo was asked about his opinion, he did mention by the statistics, Djokovic seems to be in a more commanding position over Federer or Nadal. However, he did mention that different individuals can have different opinions. The Italian star also gave examples of Sampras and Agassi.

While speaking on the topic, Berrettini stated, “No, it’s always tricky this question for me because there are personal opinions and then there are stats and stuff. I just know we are experiencing something that didn’t happen in the last I don’t know how many years. Just looking at the stats, just looking at the numbers, he’s doing something that the other two didn’t do.”

Novak Djokovic is doing something unreal

The Wimbledon finalist praised Novak, especially for the way he has performed in the current season. He has beaten Berrettini in three Grand Slam meetings this season and they all have been on the three different surfaces the game is played on.

The 25-year-old further added, “But then everybody can say the GOAT is one player or the other player. There are still some people who think McEnroe or Sampras or Agassi was just better than him. It’s a personal feeling, I think this is what’s great about the sport.”

At the moment, Djokovic is scheduled to take on Alexander Zverev in the semifinal later today. He is two wins away from creating history and cementing his name further into the record books. We wish him the very best for the upcoming matches.
