Mayweather Promotions CEO and longtime Mayweather confidant Leonard Ellerbe said that the sport has always served as an escape to him. Mayweather turned to boxing in difficult times and got some relief from it.

Leonard Ellerbe said, “Boxing is his first love. It’s the first thing he knew how to do. When you have setbacks or are going through things, that’s what you turn to. It’s your safe haven. He likes being around the gym. He’s really passionate about becoming a great trainer. When he makes up his mind to do something, he does it. He’s in the gym, putting in the work and perfecting his craft as a trainer.”

In the past few weeks, Mayweather has expressed a serious interest in becoming a full-time trainer. He’s facing a tough time in his life right now. He first lost the mother of his kids and then almost immediately his uncle and trainer Roger Mayweather.

He now wants to follow in the footsteps of his father Floyd Sr. and Roger and help shape the next generation of fighters. And in terms of coming out of retirement to fight, with time those ideas seem more far-fetched. Speaking with FightHype.com Mayweather said, “Even if we did it again [with a McGregor fight], it’s entertainment and it’s business.”

Floyd Mayweather is clear about what he wants

Avoiding confusion among the fans, Ellerbe said, “Floyd keeps his body in shape. He’s very conscious about how he looks. He’s always been disciplined and he takes great pride in how he carries himself. His body is bladed up right now. He’s must-see TV. He’s Mr. Box Office. He’s TBE for a reason. People miss that. That’s why there is so much talk about him coming back. People miss the mega Mayweather events and beating everyone they put in front of him. They miss the excitement and rooting against him.”

He added, “If Floyd determines that [Manny Pacquiao or McGregor] can get a rematch, he’ll let the entire world know that. Right now he’s still retired, but if he changes his mind and wants to do something other than what he’s doing, he’ll let the entire world know.”

So as of now, Floyd Mayweather is solely focused on working on himself and eventually finding his ground as a professional trainer.
