“Thiem Cannot Correct This Imbalance” – Dominic Thiem Clarifies Stand On Player Relief Fund

Dominic Thiem caused a storm recently when he decided to deviate from the popularly held opinion. The Austrian tennis star said that he wasn’t a fan of the ATP Player’s Relief Fund.

Instead, he suggested that donation should be left to the discretion of players. The rationale behind his thinking was that not all players contribute equally to the game. In fact, not all are equally serious about their career.

That’s why Thiem thought that top-ranking players should get to decide whom they want to support. In a recent interview, he suggested that his comments were taken out of context and he did realize the structural problems. Let’s find out what he had to say.

What did Dominic Thiem say? 

Dominic Thiem said that he was in no mood to clarify what he said. He completely stood by his earlier statements. He proceeded to explain how the sport can’t be compared to football. That’s where he highlighted a fundamental difference. This was majorly in relation to the challenger tournaments.

“Football has to be left out, this is by far the number one sport, they are practiced by far more people than tennis. But there are some things that don’t go well with us. It is clear that the very best earn really well, that is the case in many sports. But the people who stand between one hundred and three hundred are incredibly strong players. It is extremely difficult to win a Challenger tournament. It cannot be that you win and make a minus. Because you took a trainer with you and you have to pay him. A lot is going wrong. But Thiem should not and cannot correct this imbalance, but must change associations, organizers and officials.”

Dominic Thiem raises some key issues. The field is actually uneven in these structural things. That’s where the officials have to step in and change the system rather than depend on the players at all points of time in the future.
