THROWBACK: When Jon Jones Choked Lyoto Machida Unconscious in UFC 140

On December 10, 2011, at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in what was the penultimate event for the UFC in 2011, the main event featured Jon Jones and Lyoto Machida contesting for the Light heavyweight championship. It was one of eight featured bouts in the UFC 140.

When Machida came up against Jon Jones, he suffered his first submission loss as he was choked unconscious by Jones.

The bout was in fact, not supposed to have happened as per the initial plans. UFC president had announced a bout between Lyoto Machida and Phil Davis on the night. However, Davis failing to recover from an injury on time led to abrupt changes in scheduled and Jon Jones was put up against Machida.

Arguably the greatest of all time, Jon Jones was destroying legends of the sport with ease ever since he made his appearance in UFC. He became the youngest fighter to become UFC champion with a dominant finish over Mauricio Rua. In his next fight, Jones was scheduled to defend his title against Lyoto Machida. Many believed that Lyoto was going to be the one who will solve the puzzle named Jon Jones. Although Machida put a valiant effort, in the end, he became another victim of Jon Jones.

The fight, once it started, remained even throughout the first round. In the second round, just after Machida was checked by the cage-side doctor for a gash on his forehead, Jones came out with a submission move. Jones punched Machida and grabbed him into a standing guillotine choke. Machida refused to tap out and fell unconscious. And for the first time in his career, Machida lost via technical submission and only has one more loss via submission till date.  Jon Jones retained his Light Heavyweight Championship title and the fight was awarded the event’s “Fight of the Night.”

With his choke, Jon Jones was subjected to a few questions in the MMA community. A few criticized him for what he did. But according to the victim Machida, it was a fight and that’s what people do in the bout.

“It was totally respectful to me,” Machida had told SPORTV.com (roughly translated). “It was a shocking end to the story. Sometimes, those who hear may wonder if there was any disrespect, but he did his job, choked me and won. You can’t ask him to make love to me, right?”
