Browns quarterback competition just added another name to the list. For weeks, the buzz centered around Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders, but now even Dillon Gabriel is in the mix. He is showing his skills and taking some reps in training camp. And the reps might increase more if he fulfils one condition Todd Monken stated.

“At some point, when you start in the spring, or some point in the spring in the fall, you have to set some form of a depth chart in terms of reps. That’s just the way it goes,” Browns head coach Todd Monken said in a press conference on August 3. “I said it the other day: the player, everybody’s competing, but you’re not guaranteed the same amount of reps.

“So, it’s up to the player to take advantage and maximize those reps, which I feel like Dillon has done. So we see, as we move forward, if that continues, we’ll continue to up his reps. I mean, he’s earned that.”

So, if Gabriel keeps performing well, he will get more reps.

After playing well during the first four days of training camp, Gabriel earned more chances to practice with the first-team offensive line and took part earlier in one seven-on-seven drill. One of his best moments of training camp came when he rolled to his left and threw a crossing pass to tight end Harold Fannin Jr.

Dillon Gabriel’s rookie season started on a positive note, but it became more difficult as the year went on. He played in 10 games and started six for the Browns. During that time, he completed 110 of 185 passes for 937 yards, threw seven touchdown passes and two interceptions, and added 86 rushing yards.

Things got worse when Gabriel was injured in Week 11 against the Baltimore Ravens. He suffered a head injury that required a concussion check at halftime. After that, Shedeur Sanders took over the field for the rest of the season.

But now Gabriel is proving what he is capable of.

Apart from him, Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders have both shared the first-team quarterback duties during the first four days of training camp. So, the Browns are giving the quarterbacks an equal chance to show their skills.

Shedeur Sanders has had some good moments during training camp. On the Browns’ first padded practice, he led a strong two-minute drive, completed a big pass to Tylan Wallace, and then threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Gage Larvadain.

Deshaun Watson also started that practice with a good pass to tight end Harold Fannin Jr., but the offense could not keep moving afterward. Watson has also had a tough start to camp, throwing six interceptions over the first four practices.

Now, with Dillon Gabriel in the mix, he can also become a real threat to both Sanders and Watson in QB1 competition ahead of the 2026 season.
