From War in Syria to Tokyo Olympics 2020 – The Incredible Journey of the 23-Year-Old Yusra Mardini

The name Yusra Mardini has come to prominence at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 as the world’s biggest sporting festival unfolds in Japan. Mardini, who was born and brought up in Darayya, Syria, competed in 100-meter butterfly swimming today.

She spent her younger years under the most difficult circumstances one can imagine. After her house was destroyed in the Syrian Civil War, Mardini decided to evade the country with her sister.

They were tried to be smuggled to Greece by boat with 18 other immigrants. However, the boat stopped working mid ocean as it exceeded its passenger capacity. Mardini and her sister swam for 3 hours before the boat motor started working again.

They eventually reached Lebasos before walking their way to Germany, Europe. Her parents and younger sister also managed to flee Syria and reach Germany. The family eventually settled in Berlin in 2015.

Mardini had previously represented Syria in the junior levels in international competition in 2012. She carried on her swimming training upon reaching Germany in the hope to qualify for the Olympics. She managed to qualify for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio as well.

Mardini’s valiant story continued after 2016 as well. She managed to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in Japan. The swimmer represented the Refugee Olympic team in Japan. Mardini came third in the 100-meter butterfly heats this time.

But Mardini’s story stretches beyond the results and rankings. She is a true example of overcoming adversities to eventually achieve an athlete’s ultimate dream, i.e. to be a part of the Olympic games.

Needless to say, she has certainly managed to do so. Also, her achievements have set a benchmark for other athletes, as it will rejuvenate them to follow their dreams as well.

Also, Mardini released an autobiography in 2018 detailing the incredible story of her life and professional career. The book which goes by the name of “Butterfly: From Refugee to Olympian – My Story of Rescue, Hope, and Triumph”, was released on May 3rd, 2018. Famous director Stephen Daldry has expressed his interest in making a movie based on Mardini’s story.
