BREAKING: Simone Biles Pulls Out of Another Event at Tokyo Olympics 2020

On Tuesday, the Olympics and gymnastics world received a shock when Simone Biles decided to withdraw from the Team All-around Finals competition. In a statement, Team USA also announced that they will continuously assess her on her mental health.

Further developments from Tokyo have now led to Simone Biles pulling out of the Women’s Individual All-around competition as well. The 24-year-old is the reigning Olympic champion in the event. It is not yet sure if she will compete in the other events.

Simone Biles has been very open to the press and her fans about mental health. The Olympic gold medallist has always spoken openly about the immense mental pressure that athletes are under. She also criticized the media for some of this pressure.

On Tuesday, after the first rotation of the Women’s Team All-around event, Biles landed awkwardly and immediately sat on the sidelines. They later escorted her out of the mats followed by an official statement from Team USA confirming her withdrawal from the event.

Despite withdrawing from the event, Biles came back on the mats to cheer her teammates on. Team USA went on to win Silver without their talisman, a remarkable feat. After the event was over, in an interview, Simone Biles spoke about her mental health.

She said she felt the weight of the world on her shoulders. Preparing for Tokyo 2020, despite the event getting postponed, was a mental and physical struggle for the gymnast. She felt okay coming into the Olympics, but the pressure and the spotlight took a toll on her mental health.

Individual All-around event

With Biles pulling out of the event, her teammate Jade Carey will take her place in the event. Jade Carey finished ninth in qualifying for the Individual Women’s All-around competition. With no further indications as to whether Biles will compete in the rest of her events, her fans and the entire country will be waiting to see what develops in Tokyo next.

“We also have to focus on ourselves, because at the end of the day we’re human, too,” Biles said. “So, we have to protect our mind and our body, rather than just go out there and do what the world wants us to do.”
