Alex Morgan expresses disappointment after semifinal failure in Tokyo Olympics

Morgan, who turned 32 last month, made her Olympic debut at the 2012 London Olympics. Aged just 23, she aided USA’s charge to yet another gold medal by scoring three goals and making four assists. Along with Megan Rapinoe and Carli Lloyd, she became one of the most feared attackers in women’s football.

In the Rio Olympics, Sweden shocked USA in the quarterfinals to ensure the first time that USA didn’t reach the gold medal match. Despite that setback, USA arrived in Tokyo as favorites following their World Cup victory in 2019.

However, Jessie Fleming converted a 74th minute penalty to deny USA an opportunity of winning gold for the second successive time. While the result sent American fans and players into tears, Morgan posted a tweet where she expressed disappointment, but hunger to still bring a bronze medal back home.

She wrote“Devastated to say the least not to be competing for a gold medal, but hungry for more and thankful we get to compete for bronze in 2 days. Thank you everyone for the support!”

While USA still have a strong team, Australia will be no pushovers. Although they lost to Sweden in the semifinals, they lost by the same 1-0 margin as USA. Hence, the Americans will need Morgan, Rapinoe and Lloyd to carry the attacking burden in the best way possible in two days’ time to stand a chance of taking bronze.
