“Devastated”- Alex Morgan Makes a Statement After Tokyo Olympics Loss

When USA’s women’s football team take the field, fans instantly recognise the #13 shirt worn by Alex Morgan. Since her international debut in 2010, Morgan has an impressive 111 goals to her name in 184 appearances.
Coming into the Tokyo Olympics, fans expected her and the USA team to return to the top in Olympic football. However, Canada pulled off the biggest upset of the tournament by securing a narrow 1-0 victory over USA in the semifinal yesterday.
Earlier today, Morgan shared a tweet summing up her emotions after their shock loss in the semifinals.

Morgan, who turned 32 last month, made her Olympic debut at the 2012 London Olympics. Aged just 23, she aided USA’s charge to yet another gold medal by scoring three goals and making four assists. Along with Megan Rapinoe and Carli Lloyd, she became one of the most feared attackers in women’s football.
In the Rio Olympics, Sweden shocked USA in the quarterfinals to ensure the first time that USA didn’t reach the gold medal match. Despite that setback, USA arrived in Tokyo as favorites following their World Cup victory in 2019.
However, Jessie Fleming converted a 74th minute penalty to deny USA an opportunity of winning gold for the second successive time. While the result sent American fans and players into tears, Morgan posted a tweet where she expressed disappointment, but hunger to still bring a bronze medal back home.

USA to take on Australia in bronze medal match
Although USA their semifinal match, there is still all to play for. On August 5, they will take on Australia in the bronze medal match at 5:00pm local time.
While USA still have a strong team, Australia will be no pushovers. Although they lost to Sweden in the semifinals, they lost by the same 1-0 margin as USA. Hence, the Americans will need Morgan, Rapinoe and Lloyd to carry the attacking burden in the best way possible in two days’ time to stand a chance of taking bronze.
