Although they take a lot of courage, marriage proposals aren’t that rare at the Olympic Games. In recent editions, various athletes broke the question to their partners during the Games, and that tradition continued at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics 2020.

Argentine fencer Maria Belen Perez Maurice received a surprise of this kind from her coach, Lucas Guillermo Saucedo. Saucedo broke the question during her post-match interview yesterday, which left her short of words.

On Day 3 of the Tokyo Olympics, Perez Maurice took on Anna Marton in the first round of the individual sabre category. Although she put on a competitive display, the Argentine lost 15-12 to the World No. 5. This loss meant she replicated her result from the 2012 London Olympics.

However, little did the World No. 38 know her coach was going to surprise her after the match. While Perez Maurice took questions from the media, Saucedo held up a handwritten note with the words, “Will you marry me, please?” written in Spanish.

Although she didn’t notice it initially, the reporter motioned her to take a look at her coach, who stood behind her. While she shed tears of joy, they shared a warm embrace after Saucedo’s proposal.

The 36-year-old fencer shared a relationship with her coach for the last 17 years. In fact, Saucedo first proposed to Perez Maurice 11 years ago at the world championships in Paris, which she rejected. However, there wasn’t to be a second rejection for Saucedo this time.

Saucedo explained how the time was right on this occasion. He said, “I love her, and when she lost the match she got very sad, so maybe this proposal should change her mentality. I wrote on the paper in the moment.”
