Toni Nadal on Rafael Nadal: “He Can Overcome Federer’s Mark”

Rafael Nadal swept his 12th Roland Garros title at the French Open 2019 after defeating Dominic Thiem 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 in the finals. With this victory, Rafael Nadal adds the 18th major title to his grand slam cabinet.

The Spaniard is just 2 short of Roger Federer‘s record of 20 grand slam titles. Toni Nadal, uncle and former coach of Rafael Nadal suggested in an interview that his nephew can surpass Roger Federer’s record of 20 grand slam titles.

In the program El Larguero by Cadena Ser, Toni Nadal manifest his confidence on Rafael Nadal. He said,As an uncle, I tell you that he can beat Federer, Rafael still has a few more years of tennis at the highest level and it is possible that he can overcome Federer’s mark, this victory will give him the motivation to try harder.”

He continued, “Rafael is close to Federer, every year it costs more to win a title but this Roland Garros will give him wings, the titles feed you the desire to fight, I have always had great confidence in Rafael, I trust that he will surpass them.” 

Toni Nadal suggested in a funny statement that Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic have their family and children to look forward too beyond tennis. He said, “Federer wins 21 at Wimbledon, Roger is the best player in history, he is 37 years old and has four children, and with four sons, Federer has to dedicate himself to his family and leave tennis and Djokovic. He has two children … Let’s see if he does the same.”

Toni Nadal revealed that Rafael Nadal went through many injuries in his career but he also had some luck. He further added, “My nephew has had a lot of luck in life, it is true that he has had problems and he has overcome them but he has also had the reward of success and that always serves as a stimulus.”

Toni Nadal also praised his nephew, Rafael Nadal for conquering the 12th French Open title of his career but he also thinks that it is not impossible to break this incredible record at the Parisian clay.

He continued, “My common sense tells me that it is very difficult for someone to get twelve years to be the best in a tournament of this prestige but my common sense also tells me that if he has done it, another can do it.”
