Toni Nadal, former coach, and uncle of Rafael Nadal has claimed that the world no.1, Novak Djokovic is the favorite to win the US Open 2019 title after he conquered the Wimbledon Championships 2019, last week.

Toni Nadal also suggested that it was better for his nephew, Rafael Nadal that Novak Djokovic defeated Roger Federer in the Wimbledon Championships final on Sunday as it brought the three players closer together at the top of the grand slam tally.

Toni Nadal said in an interview with COPE and Radio MARCA, “It would be in Rafael’s best interests if Djokovic won because now the three players are closer together at the top.”

The Spanish coach also praised Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer for playing a spectacular final at the All England Lawn Tennis Club. However, he suggested that the 2008 Wimbledon final between Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer was better.

He said, “It was a very good and lively match for the fans. It had all the ingredients that it could’ve had, with Federer’s two match-points, the length. Although the data shows that the 2008 final was better.”

The three players are close together in their Grand slam tallies with Federer currently leading with 20 major titles, Nadal behind him with 18 grand slam titles and Djokovic narrowing down the gap is now on 16. The US Open 2019 will certainly be crucial for either one of them to win. However, Toni Nadal is backing the Serbian to conquer his 17th major title at Flushing Meadows.

He said, “Today, I see Djokovic as a favorite for the US Open because he’s won Wimbledon and the Australian Open, but the three are very close.”

Toni Nadal continued, “I said that Nadal would come close at Wimbledon because he won in Rome and Roland Garros, and was in a great place mentally. He didn’t play his best tennis in the semi-finals, he wasn’t like he was on other days.”
