Open-world games are undoubtedly one of the most popular gaming genres out there, and for good reason. Starting from the 1985 release ‘Mercenary’, to the current Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, or Witcher 3. The lawless nature of the gameplay, offering players the choice of staying in the main story or carelessly wander around completing side quests. However, the linear nature of the main storyline of open-world games helps keep it all together. But anyway, that’s all about the introductory note. Let’s jump right in, and check out some of the best games of this genre.

Now, this list is in no particular order of quality. These are some of the games we prefer from the genre.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The 3rd title in the Witcher franchise is arguably the best one. While some argue about it being a semi open-world game since there are some areas in the game that cannot be accessed without a loading screen. But otherwise, this has been one of CD Projekt Red’s greatest projects yet. That is, excluding the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077. It is interesting that certain features and open-world elements in CP2077 seem to be an improvement and futuristic versions of those in Witcher 3. In fact, devs took the idea of NPCs having a daily routine from Witcher 3 and implemented it after bettering it in CP2077. The same goes for the similarities between Cyberware and Witcher-Eye.

Far Cry franchise

Far Cry has been a successful classic over the years. The stories of the Far Cry games have a similar structure: There is a one-man overlord or a fascist leader in a sovereign region and the protagonist becomes a part of the rebel organization fighting the leader, sometimes accidentally, like in Far Cry 3. With intense storylines and more than enough side quests, set in intricately detailed locations makes this franchise the big hit that it is. Oh, and also, not to forget the iconic villains like Vaas and Pagan Min.

Horizon Zero Dawn

This timed PlayStation exclusive has only recently come to PC. This acclaimed biopunk adventure title is arguably one of the greatest and most fascinating open-world games out there. The PC version is even more enhanced than the PlayStation original. Follow Alloy on her journey to uncover her past in this adventure RPG set in a world overrun by bio-enhanced wildlife. This title might be a good choice before its sequel Horizon: Forbidden West releases next year for PlayStation.

Grand Theft Auto franchise

Now, here’s a series of open-world games that is so iconic that it has become almost synonymous with the term open-world. Although there has not been a new installment in this series for a while now, GTA Online has seen steady growth in its player community. In addition to this, GTA V will be re-released for the upcoming PS5 console with new and enhanced features. Become an outlaw in Los Santos and live your life, the GTA way.

Assassin’s Creed Franchise

Once again, a series that needs no introduction. Arguably the most iconic franchises from Ubisoft, AC has a vast fanbase. With huge open-world maps, set across various ages, this series lets you live through history, starting from ancient Egypt to the Industrial Age. The upcoming title of the series, Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, focuses on the Scandinavian invasion of England. Live as a part of the creed and ‘work in darkness to serve the light.’
