The decade has come to a close which means it is time to declare the best in the field. Here are the top ten WTA tennis players of the last decade.

1. Serena Williams

If I had to name the most dominating player this decade it would be Serena Williams. She won a total of 12 Grand Slams in singles which is more than any other player. In addition to this, she won an Olympic Gold Medal in 2012 completing the Career Golden Slam. She also spent 236 weeks as world no.t which included 186 consecutive weeks. With these achievements, she is definitely the best player this decade.

2. Angelique Kerber

Angelique Kerber makes the second place on this list. She will be looking at the last decade as a successful one as she won 3 Grand Slams. In addition to this, she also won the Olympic Silver at the 2016 Rio Olympics. However, towards the end of the decade,  she had struggles with form which led her to fall out of the top 10. We can hope that with the beginning of the new decade she will go back to her winning ways.

3. Simona Halep

The Romanian ended the decade on a high note. After reaching the finals of Grand Slams, she finally won it at the French Open in 2018. In addition to this, she also won the Wimbledon title in 2019 beating Serena Williams by playing fantastic tennis. After her breakthrough in 2014, Halep has consistently played good tennis which makes her one of the best players this decade.

4. Maria Sharapova

Maria Sharapova has also had a good decade if we look at it closely. She won 2 Grand Slams this year both at the French Open. By winning the 2012 French Open, she completed the Career Grand Slam. She picked up an Olympic Silver at the 2012 Olympics. However, her decade was ruined by the fact that she was tested positive for meldonium. She can make this next decade a much better decade than the last one.

5. Victoria Azarenka

The Belarusian at her peak was one of the best. She could challenge the best players in tennis. She won 2 Grand Slams at the Australian Open. In addition to this, She also reached the final of the US Open twice and also won the Olympic Bronze Medal in 2012. Due to a number of problems, she has lost her dominance in tennis. We can expect her to come back in the new decade.

6. Petra Kvitova

Petra Kvitova has played some amazing tennis this past decade. She won 2 Grand Slams in this decade which was at Wimbledon in 2011 and in 2014. She also reached the final of the Australian Open in 2019 and she won the WTA Finals back in 2011. She also won a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics. These achievements make her one of the best tennis players this decade.

7. Li Na

The Chinese Player Li Na has made it into this list despite not playing half of the decade because of her retirement in 2014. She achieved a lot in this decade as she won 2 Grand Slams – one at the French Open and one at the Australian Open. In 2014, at the age of 32, Li Na retired from professional tennis. She was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2019.

8. Garbine Muguruza

The Spaniard enjoyed a ton of success this past decade. She made her mark in tennis by beating Serena Williams in the second round of the 2014 French Open. She went on to win a French Open title in 2016 beating Serena Williams and a Wimbledon title in 2017 beating Venus Williams. In addition to this, She won 7 WTA titles this decade. She has definitely been one of the best tennis players this decade

9. Naomi Osaka

Naomi Osaka made her into this list by producing some amazing tennis towards the end of the decade. She rose to prominence by beating Serena Williams at the 2018 US Open which was very controversial. She continued to play good tennis and won the 2019 Australian Open beating Petra Kvitova. However, she had a massive drop in form in 2019. She will be looking to play her best tennis again in the new decade.

10 Ashleigh Barty

Ashleigh Barty has had an amazing decade. She won her first Grand Slam singles’ title at the 2019 French Open. She has done well in doubles also reaching the finals of all 4 Grand Slams winning the US Open in 2018. She won over 4 million at the 2019 WTA Finals which set a record for most prize money at a single tournament. She was definitely one of the best tennis players this decade.
