Inter Milan are making a strong push for Atletico Madrid defensive midfielder Mario Suarez, but the Italian side face stiff opposition from Tottenham Hotspur, as Mauricio Pochettino is reported to have shortlisted the 28-year-old as one of the club’s main targets for the summer transfer window.

The Nerazzurri made two offers for the Atleti midfielder in the January transfer window but eventually failed in their pursuit after the Madrid youth academy graduate decided to prolong his stay with Diego Simone’s men. However, the Italian side is reported to have now rekindled their interest in the Spanish international.

If Roberto Mancini succeeds in securing the player’s signatures, another name would be added to the list of big splashes Inter has made in the summer transfer market – the signing of French midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia and soon-to-be announced transfer of Atletico Madrid centre back Joao Miranda.

However, the Italian’s plans could be disrupted as it has now been revealed by Sky Italia that Tottenham Hotspur have also entered the race for his acquisition and have placed a bid in the region of £6 million.

The Spanish international’s contract is up in 2017 and the north London side are set to enter talks with him this week in a bid to thrash out a deal before the club’s pre-season fixture schedule gets underway.

The midfielder struggled to be a regular starter under Diego Simeone at Vincente Calderon and the allure of first team football could see him favoring a move to North London as the arrival of Inter’s latest signing, Geoffrey Kondogbia, stacks up the defensive midfielder role at the San Siro as the 22-year-old French international also operates at deep midfield.
