Last weekend was the Clash at the LA Coliseum, which saw the NASCAR Next Gen cars make their debuts. In the buildup to that race, there was a lot of concern about whether these cars would be better than the Gen 6 machines. Fortunately, the good news is that the new cars put on a great show. In light of this, Toyota Racing Development boss David Wilson confessed that the Gen 6 cars would struggle at the Coliseum.

He said, “I don’t think so. I don’t think so. Again, we’ll never know. The irony is we wrestled with NASCAR – a lot of us wanted to take the Gen-6 to the Clash because we didn’t want to tear up our brand new stuff. If it was going to be a crap show so then let’s just take our old crap. We were wrong. We were wrong. I applaud NASCAR for holding the line. This is an example where they had it right – good for them, good for us and good for our fans.”

What else did he say about the NASCAR Next Gen cars?

According to Wilson, the new car was the biggest reason behind the Clash’s success. Apparently, a few of the drivers agreed with that assessment. Kyle Busch admitted that he did not know if the Gen 6 car would have done well at the track. He observed that the tires are a lot skinnier. Additionally, the new cars have a solid rear-end axle, which allows the car to wheel hop on the curbs.

The Joe Gibbs Racing driver also believes that the turning radius of the Next Gen car is better than its predecessor. Owing to that, it would not have been able to entertain the crowds better than the new version. Needless to say, it definitely showed that it was superior, as the event was a roaring success.
