British Davis Cup team captain Leon Smith has been associated with the team since 2010. He helped them achieve success by winning the Davis Cup in 2015. Smith led the Brits to their victory at this Cup for the first time since 1936. Great Britain beat Belgium 3-1 in the final.

Leon believes that the Davis Cup finals should be held in London once the term for Madrid gets over this year. It would make sense since the ATP Finals’ term with the O2 arena just ended. It was a great venue, and players really looked forward to playing at that particular event. For 11 long years, the season-ending tournament was held in London.

Davis Cup Final should be held at the O2

Reflecting on this aspect, Smith said, “The 02 Arena has been a great place for the ATP Finals, it is tried and tested as a tennis venue, so what an amazing event that would be if we could host the Davis Cup final in London when Madrid’s run hosting the event comes to an end.”

It’s already been decided that the Laver Cup in 2022 will be hosted at the O2 in London. Smith also went on to state the liking of players for this particular event. He said, “We have the Laver Cup coming to the UK as well and I think this country is a great destination for something like that. The hosting of the ATP Finals has been such a massive success. Ask any of the players and they absolutely love that venue, so it would be great to get it there if we can.”

Regarding the Davis Cup win back in 2015, Smith had named a 5-man team comprising Andy Murray, Jamie Murray, Kyle Edmund, James Ward, and Dominic Inglot. The tie was decided when Murray beat Belgium’s, David Goffin in the fourth match.

Leon Smith has coached several Scottish tennis players over the years. In fact, he has even coached Andy Murray when he was young (11 years – 15 years).
