Zverev defeats Murray.World No. 1 Andy Murray’s hopes of winning his first Australian Open title ended in round four after a shocking defeat at the hands of World No. 50, Mischa Zverev of Germany. Murray dropped serve eight times as Zverev won 7-5 5-7 6-2 6-4 at the Rod Laver Arena. It is the lowest-ranked player he has lost to at a Grand Slam since the 2006 Australian Open.
After Djokovic’s exit in second round, chances for Murray to win the title widened but the 29 year old German executed serve-and-volley style throughout the match to cause the big upset. It is the Briton’s earliest defeat at Australian Open since 2009.
