With the UFC making a comeback following the Coronavirus epidemic, Henry Cejudo is looking to defend his title against Dominick Cruz. The Dominator’s return to the octagon has left several fans and MMA pundits concerned about his ability to perform, considering his long leave of absence from the sport. However, Daniel Cormier has faith in the 35-year-old fighter.

While speaking on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show, DC reveals that he has complete faith in the former champion’s skills. And considering Cruz’s track record, Cormier is not wrong to have such strong faith in the American fighter. The strongest advocate about the folly in believing in ring rust. Cruz has proved that it doesn’t exist time and time again.

“He can prove it now. [He’s proven it] 3 times before. He came back to fight Mizugaki, Dillashaw, and then he had the Garbrandt fight. Which he lost,” says Daniel Cormier as he explains the reason behind his strong support for Cruz.

“I think he’s another master of preparation. One of those guys that believe so strongly that he’s prepared, that he can say ring rust doesn’t exist,” says Cormier as he praises Cruz for his determination and his never back down attitude.

However, on a personal level, DC feels that ring rust is a real issue that plagues many fighters.

Daniel Cormier Hails Dominick Cruz For His Mentality

All said and done, Cruz’s relentless desire to contend for the title is what amazes Daniel Cormier.

“But I think what’s more impressive about Dominick is, he almost willed this title shot into existence. Right before he got his title fight, they said he turned away a fight against Cory Sandhagen. But Dominic who I had spoken to personally was like ‘I deserve a title shot.’ So if he did say no to the Sandhagen fight, it worked!” Cormier tells Ariel Helwani

Cruz has always been very vocal about his desire to get a shot at the title. However, a rumor surfaced about Cruz backing away from a fight against Cory Sandhagen

“I never said no to Sandhagen. I don’t say no to fights. What I said no to was not fighting Petr Yan,” said Cruz to lay such rumors to rest. For at that time, Petr Yan was the fastest way to the title and a shot at the title is what Cruz wanted.

The inaugural UFC bantamweight champion last stepped into the octagon to take on Cody Garbrandt in December 2016. Therefore taking on Henry Cejudo, one of the most skilled fighters in the division, will not be an easy task.
