Chaos looms over the lightweight division with Khabib unable to move out of Russia. And the top contender is looking to take on Justin Gaethje instead of the titleholder. Travel restrictions imposed on Khabib paved the way for a fight between Gaethje and Tony Ferguson.
“This impacts everybody. There’s three (events) that have already been postponed that we’re going to work out over the next several weeks, and I don’t know where this puts anybody.”- Dana White

As White puts it, the winner of the fight between Gaethje and Ferguson will get an opportunity to unify the with The Eagle. The fight will take place later this year after Nurmagomedov has observed Ramadan.
It is difficult to identify where Conor McGregor can be placed in this situation. It has almost been 4 months since his last fight and McGregor is still waiting for his next fight. The Coronavirus epidemic and Khabib pulling out of UFC 249 have made it even more complicated.

“Couldn’t Have Worked Out Any Better”- Dana White
“Everybody felt that if Conor was going to get a shot at Khabib that actually Gaethje should get it before Conor. I mean it couldn’t have worked out any better. You get Gaethje vs. Tony. It’s the fight that makes sense. It’s two of the top guys in the world. Khabib is out so the winner will face Khabib.”- Dana White
The Notorious One has been eyeing a rematch with Khabib but it does not seem like he will get it. And unfortunately, this plan leaves McGregor out in the cold. His plans to work his way back to be a title contender as well as plotting his revenge against Khabib are seemingly falling apart.

“Conor really wants that rematch with Khabib, while Khabib and Tony or Gaethje won’t fight now until probably September. So yeah, nobody saw this coming. This is one of those things you can’t predict, or see coming, but it happened, and we’re rolling with it and we’re gonna get it figured out.”- Dana White
