Tensions have been flaring between fighters as we crawl into fight week. After the UFC’s relentless efforts UFC 249 is finally a reality, however,  it comes at the expense of Khabib Nurmagomedov pulling out. And Tony Ferguson has a lot to say about it.

Tony Ferguson has been looking to take on Justin Gaethje since news of the Dagestani fighter backing out came up. The pair will be fighting for an interim title and a potential fight with the currently undisputed champion himself.

A couple of days ahead of D-Day, El Cucuy has taken shots at two of the most well-known fighters in the lightweight division if not the UFC itself, Khabib, and Conor McGregor.

During a media conference call, Ferguson proclaimed himself as the true champion in the lightweight division. As far as El Cucuy is concerned, Khabib and McGregor should bow out and make space for the real champions of the division, Gaethje and himself.

“I’m gonna be real. Him[Khabib] and McNuggets[McGregor], they both need to f*****g retire. The only two real men out there are me and Justin Gaethje. America motherf*****s!” said an overtly patriotic Tony Ferguson during the media conference call.

How Tony Ferguson Justifies Feeling This Way

Khabib has not stepped in the octagon since his last fight against Dustin Poirier, back in September 2019. After Khabib pulled out of a fight against Ferguson, he called on the UFC to strip Khabib of his title.

Considering the number of times the opportunity to contend for the title has been stolen from him, many feel Ferguson’s mentality, fighting for the actual title and not the interim title, is not ill-founded.

UFC 249 serves up another shot at the interim title for Tony Ferguson. The first came in 2017 when he took on Kevin Lee and established himself as the interim champion.

However, when the call for unifying the title came, a freak accident rendered him out of action. Khabib went on to take on Al Iaquinta instead and became the undisputed UFC lightweight champion.

As far as McGregor is concerned, the Irishman made big proclamation of stepping in to fight at UFC 249 if either fighter were to back out. However, when the moment to step up knocked on The Notorious One’s door, the fighter was knee-deep in the war against Coronavirus back home, in Ireland. The former two-division champion has been dabbling in the fields of philanthropy and politics during this international crisis.

Do you think Tony Ferguson is in the right, calling Khabib and McGregor out in this way?
