UFC 249 was a landmark event for the promotion. Henry Cejudo announcing his retirement from the sport and Justin Gaethje putting the cursed fight between Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov to rest. However, years later, this event may be remembered for something else entirely. Thanks to the lustrous career of Georges St-Pierre.

The promotion announced that the legendary Canadian fighter will be headlining the UFC’s 2020 class of Hall of Famers. There are only a handful of fighters more deserving of this honor that GSP, that is if they even exist.

However, due to the Coronavirus pandemic, GSP’s induction to the Hall of Fame could not be done in a more jubilant manner. Under normal circumstances, the UFC tends to surprise the nominee sitting cage-side. Something like that was not possible this time.

However, that did not slow GSP down from reacting to the news euphorically. UFC President Dana White, called the former middleweight and welterweight champion during the event to break the news.

“This was supposed to be a lot bigger when we announced this, but this pandemic thing. But you’re being inducted into the Hall of Fame, my friend,” White told Georges St-Pierre over a video call.

“Oh, really? What an honor. Thank you so much. Thank you for everything man. Wow. I don’t know what to say. What a great honor,” said GSP with a grin on his face.

GSP is widely recognized as one of, if not, the best fighters in the UFC. GSP grabbed the welterweight title twice while making 9 title defenses. In addition, he held the middleweight title once as well. All this in the span of his 15-year long career.

Other than that he boasted of a record of 26-2-0. He only lost to Matt Serra and Matt Hughes. Both losses that he avenged later on in his career. GSP’s induction ceremony for the Hall of Fame may take place later this year.
