Fans all over the world were looking forward to watching Khabib Nurmagomedov take on Tony Ferguson at UFC 249. However, those plans were nixed due to the imposition of travel restrictions across the world, in an attempt to control the spread of the virus. Dana White recently addressed the media regarding the same.

However, Khabib pulling out of the fight paved the way for Justin Gaethje to take on Ferguson, with an interim title at stake.

Khabib has been at the receiving end of a lot of criticism despite having Gaethje to fill in for him. Several fans criticize the Dagestani fighter for uprooting his UFC 249 training camp from California and traveling to Russia, then being unable to leave due to the quarantine.

However, as far as consolation fights go, a Tony Ferguson vs Justin Gaethje fight does not sound half bad. The interim title fight will be the first of many exciting fights.

Even though the reigning lightweight champion is not really at fault here, the MMA world has not been kind to him. So much so that Ferguson called for the UFC to strip Khabib of his title. In addition, he faced a lot of flak from the former two-division champion, Conor McGregor for pulling out.

However, Dana White came to The Eagle’s rescue during an interview with BT Sport. While backing one of the greatest fighters in the promotion, the UFC frontman took responsibility for the situation.

“There was a lot of questioning Khabib. What he said is absolutely true. None of us saw coming what happened and how fast it was rapidly changing. The world was literally changing by the day. We all made some bad decisions that got him stuck in Moscow. It wasn’t just him, we all did. I take responsibility for that, too,” said Dana White while referring to a post made by Khabib on social media.

UFC 249, the biggest test for Dana White

With Khabib on the back of their minds, the promotion is focussing on getting through the Coronavirus situation. Making UFC 249 a resounding success is imperative for the UFC.

The promotion and Dana White are on the frontlines, seeking normalcy unrelentingly. A failure at this event will result in a domino effect that will prevent other sporting institutions to come out of their breaks anytime soon.

The stakes, for the UFC, are through the roof with this one. The promotion has two more events queued up to take place in the same week. One of the biggest reasons as to why White is so adamant about pulling this event off is because he wants to pave the way for other sporting organizations to follow suit.
