As the world of Mixed Martial Arts braces for the impact of one of the most bitter rivalries playing out in the Octagon, Kamaru Usman feels that Jorge Masvidal will have the upper hand.
Of course, ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ has no doubt that he will beat Jorge. However, he feels that the fact that Jorge stepped in on such short notice will inevitably play in his favor, whether he wins or loses. In an interview with Bret Okamoto from ESPN, Usman said,
“There’s already a built-in excuse here. You see the headlines. You see the things they [media] are posting. It’s like, ‘Jorge Masvidal steps in on six days’ notice.’ It’s all, ‘Oh yeah! Masvidal is stepping in Masvidal is doing this’, to try and still keep this guy up.”

Truly, the fact that Jorge stepped in out of nowhere after the unfortunate news regarding Gilbert Burns created a huge surge of excitement across the MMA Universe. Especially after his long-drawn disagreement with the UFC regarding fight purse, the sudden involvement in the title fight came as a major surprise.
But Kamaru is not buying the hype. He said that Jorge was training for the fight for a long time. Yet, Kamaru himself had to train for Gilbert Burns.
“He has one guy that he has been training for the whole entire time. Which is me. While I just did a full training camp for another guy. And I am the one risking everything. This is a win-win for him. I’m risking everything.”
Kamaru Usman explains why Jorge Masvidal has a built-in excuse
It is evident that Usman is not too pleased with the fact that ‘Gamebred’ already has an excuse for his upcoming loss. Moreover, he is not at all happy about the negligible acknowledgment given to the fact that he, too, said yes to fight Masvidal on such short notice.

“The story right now? The storyline is, ‘Oh Masvidal is stepping in oh seven days notice to take on the champ’. I’m the one risking everything! I had to say yes as well. But no, it’s Masvidal, stepping in doing all that.”

“After he gets beat up, there’s a built-in excuse, ‘Oh well, he took the fight on seven days notice anyways’. So, yeah, that made me a little uncomfortable. But at the end of the day, it’s the story of my career. I have to go out there and do my job. As my friend says, at the end of the day, people are going to remember who won and who lost.”
