Max Holloway and Alexander Volkanovski will meet in a rematch of their Featherweight title clash at UFC 245. On that occasion, the Australian snapped the Hawaiian’s multi-fight win streak at Featherweight. ‘Blessed’ had previously lost a 145 lbs fight in 2013 to Conor McGregor. If their first clash was a preview, then fans could have a cracker of a UFC 251 co-main event on Fight Island.

The Great’ who is in his first reign captured the belt in December and extended his professional win streak to 18. It was his 8th UFC win and 5th via decision in the company. The other 3 wins have come via TKO. He landed clean shots throughout the 25 minutes of their previous fight and will look to continue in the same vein. He won’t be looking to change anything and will aim to utilize his 2-inch reach advantage. The former rugby player isn’t big on submissions with all 3 wins in this manner coming before his time in the UFC.

Max Holloway

Blessed’ beat Anthony Pettis, Jose Aldo, Brian Ortega and Frankie Edgar in Featherweight Championship matches. Like his opponent, he too does not have a history of submissions. He has 2 tap-out wins in the UFC, but the most recent occasions were 5 years ago against Cub Swanson at UFC on Fox: Machida vs Rockhold. Furthermore, it seems unlikely that he would use submissions against the shorter opponent. However, he may want to change stuff up as a standup battle against ‘The Great’ was not so successful last time around.

UFC 251 Prediction

On paper expect this to be a striking bout with a negligible amount of time spent on the ground. Holloway has claimed 10/21 wins via KO and will look to outstrike his opponent. He has admitted to training via Zoom for the fight as he is aware of how to use kicks and punches. He hasn’t let slip any details about submissions, but it’s safe to say he will not have applied it to anyone given that he met his coaches only at the airport.

However, out striking a clean puncher in Volkanovski may prove to be difficult unless he opens him up. ‘The Great’ will use leg kicks to keep ‘Blessed’ honest and it’s up to Holloway to convince the world that UFC 245 as just a blip. It doesn’t seem likely that he will do so at UFC 251.

Alexander Volkanovski will retain in 5 rounds the Fight Island PPV.
