Jorge Masvidal has become a bonafide star in the UFC in the last twelve months. The last two events that he has headlined have both been a hit with the fans. Before his latest outing, Masvidal and Kamaru Usman talked a lot of trash. This was because the two had a bit of history between them. However, Masvidal isn’t a fan of trash-talking to promote fights.

Masvidal took the title fight against Usman on just six-days notice. In whatever little time that the two had, the champ and the challenger went back-and-forth on social media and during the interviews.

The challenger Masvidal has been around the game long enough to understand what needs to be done to hype the fights. Therefore, he usually doesn’t take things personally. Like he said during his fight with Ben Askren, “It’s never personal, it’s always business”. However, things may have stretched a bit too far with Usman.

With the fight behind him, Masvidal hopes that the next time he fights Usman, the trash-talk wouldn’t be necessary. “I just feel like, especially me and him now, we don’t need to promote the next fight like that. We don’t have to talk about each other’s religion or ethnicity or nothing like that. He said some things that weren’t necessary. I’m sure I said some things that probably weren’t the best,” Jorge Masvidal said during the post-fight press conference.

Jorge Masvidal finds the current method of promoting fights inappropriate

Combat sports are a bit different when it comes to promoting events. More than the clash of intriguing stylistic matches, it’s the fights that have with them a genuine sense of beef that do good PPV wise. Former champ Henry Cejudo explained it the best when he said that part of the game is being an entertainer as well.

Masvidal has spent almost all his career under this methodology. However, he hopes things will get better in the future. “I just think about the future generations. They don’t have to promote fights like that to sell PPVs. I heard this card did great anyways. But I feel it doesn’t have to be promoted this way. For the younger guys coming up, you don’t have to talk shit to sell PPVs or disrespect the man’s religion,” Masvidal added.

As of now, the buzz is that UFC 251 did very good numbers-wise. Jorge Masvidal’s stock may have dipped but one can’t change the fact that he is one of the two fighters on the cover of EA UFC 4. Regardless of all the fame surrounding him, Masvidal still wishes for a change in how fighters promote the fights.
