The undisputed lightweight king Khabib Nurmagomedov spoke out at a virtual media day in anticipation of UFC 254. ‘The Eagle’ will face off against interim 155-pound champion Justin Gaethje in the company’s final event to round up Fight Island’s second leg. The pay-per-view blockbuster is being looked at as one of the biggest match-ups of the entire year. Much of its projected success is drawn from the fact that Khabib is a global icon.

Nurmagomedov [28-0] has never faltered under the bright lights, despite facing some bonafide killers. What’s more, the Dagestani champion has only lost one round in his entire career, to Conor McGregor at UFC 229. His utter domination inside the octagon has made him one of the most compelling fighters to watch.

The undefeated fighter was clear in his approach going into the bout with Gaethje. However, fight fans are intrigued by the match-up because of the skill set that Justin brings to the table. ‘The Highlight’ has an extensive collegiate wrestling background coupled with tremendously lethal striking. Despite his expertise, Khabib is only concerned with his own game plan.

“Nothing changed. I’m gonna try wrestling with him. If he’s gonna defend my takedown one time, I’m gonna try second, third, gonna try 100 times and of course, I’m gonna box with him, gonna kick with him, you know.”

Khabib’s relentless grappling mixed with techniques such as the ‘Dagestani handcuff’s’ have made him a monster on the ground. Moreover, his striking has greatly improved, having plenty of time to focus on his stand-up. In fact, he earned a memorable knockdown over McGregor in their outing which is a testament to his striking.

“It’s gonna be kickboxing and wrestling like mix. My goal is make him tired. I’m gonna make him tired, this is my goal. Maybe round number three, round number four the plan is finish him.”

The consensus active GOAT, Khabib, will look to implement a similar strategy as seen in his fights against Conor and Dustin Poirier. The tried and tested strategy of making his opponents tired and choking them out has become patented. With his game plan out in the open, it will be interesting to see if Justin Gaethje can end his streak.
