UFC flyweight title challenger Alex Perez spoke to ESPN’s Ariel Helwani and gave a run-down of his upcoming title shot. Perez is set to face off against Deiveson Figueiredo for the undisputed 125-pound title at UFC 255. The bout will be the first title defense for ‘Deus de Guerra’ and the first main event for Alex Perez.

Earlier, former bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt was supposed to fight Deiveson at UFC 255, but he suffered an injury. Perez who was fighting on the card was bumped up to the main event based on his last performance. Fans saw Perez as the rightful contender, and it seemed like Garbrandt’s profile was being used to push the fight.

The 24-5 fighter in Perez had plenty to say about ‘No Love’ when asked about his prior inclusion as the headliner. Alex felt that Cody’s recent KO of Raphael Assuncao at bantamweight wasn’t nearly enough to warrant a flyweight title shot. Moreover, he shared his belief that Cody was looking at the flyweight title as a short-cut to make a title-run.

“Honestly, I was bummed cause I felt like I deserved it. I guess Cody can’t hang with those 35’ers so he came down to try to fight us smaller guys and I don’t think he was gonna do too that great anyways with us. I mean look at that top 5 over there, they ranked him 3 or 4 after he beat Assuncao like the man’s coming off three losses you beat one guy, and then you’re fighting for a title at 25.”

“At 35 you’re gonna have to do some work and I feel like he didn’t wanna put in the work, kinda wanted to take a shortcut to the title so he cut down. I wasn’t worried about him coming down anyway [because] I don’t know if he was gonna be able to make weight, he’s never been at that weight. Doesn’t matter what you walk around at practice and stuff like that, it’s have you made the weight before and when was the last time you made it?”

“I don’t think he cuts down”-Alex Perez

Additionally, Alex Perez signed off on the fact that Cody Garbrandt was never going to follow through on making 125-pounds. He shared the sentiment that the drop from bantamweight to flyweight would be very debilitating on Cody.

“I don’t think he cuts down. It’s a lot different from 35 to 25, 10 extra pounds. He’s never competed at this weight, never depleted his body that bad. I don’t think he makes it, I don’t think he ever fights here. If he does? Great, I’d like to welcome him.”

It’s clear that Alex Perez isn’t afraid to tussle with the big names who are currently on the UFC roster. Should he win the title, he could line himself up for a title defense against Garbrandt in the future. What do you make of his comments on ‘No Love’?
