UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov took to social media and shared a desire to make a career in football. ‘The Eagle’ who comes in as an avid fan of football, or soccer, has made his love for the sport be known many times. Moreover, he frequently posts social media grabs that see him take to the field and begin training for the same.

The post comes just a day after Khabib Nurmagomedov all but finalized his retirement from active MMA competition. The Russian mauler who made it clear at UFC 254 that he will retire still left the door open till UFC 257. However, after the event wrapped up UFC President Dana White announced that Khabib won’t be coming back anytime soon. Moreover, it’s clear that he’s already found another avenue to pursue.

Nurmagomedov’s decision to retire isn’t all that surprising considering the circumstances under which he walked away. He stepped away at 29-0 and his father’s death definitely had its part to play in his decision. Chiefly, Khabib promised his mother that he’d step away from competition, and it seems like that’s what he’s followed through on.

As is with all things in MMA, the constant forward motion of the sport is of utmost importance. The departure of Nurmagomedov as the undisputed champion will certainly leave a void in the weight class. However, the likely course of action comes in through the fact that he’ll be relinquishing his championship anytime now.

There are several viable contenders who are on the cusp of picking up the lightweight championship. Dustin Poirier and Charles Oliveira are certainly front runners in the respect considering the strength of their recent performances. They have managed to string together plenty of impressive wins that have entitled the respect of their peers.

Another entrant into the title conversation is Michael Chandler, who earned a spectacular first-round victory over Dan Hooker. He came in unranked and left the octagon as a viable threat to become UFC champion. His run from a three-time Bellator MMA champion to now possibly attaining a UFC championship would be nothing short of incredible.
