‘It Actually Broke Before He Took that Step’- Veteran Referee on the Freak Injury of Conor McGregor at UFC 264

Former MMA referee ‘Big’ John McCarthy spoke out on his podcast alongside former fighter Josh Thompson on UFC 264. The event captured the attention of everyone in the MMA world and looking at the main event it’s easy to see why. Conor McGregor was defeated by Dustin Poirier via TKO due to Doctor’s stoppage after he broke his tibia and fibula.

McGregor’s gruesome leg snap brought his trilogy with Dustin Poirier to a rather disappointing conclusion. MMA pundits and fans are vehemently searching for the reason for the leg break and McCarthy joined in on the action. The season MMA referee did a deep dive on McGregor’s fight-ending injury that will keep him on the sidelines for a long time to come.

“If you go back and watch, I do feel it’s one of the checks because if you watch, when Conor takes a step before he takes a buckle, you’ll see his lower leg buckle, then he takes a step back and it folds… Something happened during that fight, on one of the kicks, with a check or something.”

“It cracked it, it fractured it and then just the weight, the pressure on it, made it break and when he took that final step you can see it folded over. Just before it, you can see that there was a problem and it actually broke before he actually took that step and it looked really bad.”

When will ‘Notorious’ make his return to the cage?

Following the devastating injury, fans wanted to know if McGregor will be making a return to the cage anytime soon. In the immediate aftermath of the injury, several notable fighters like Jon Jones and Ben Askren questioned whether McGregor would ever come back.

However, McGregor’s manager Audie Attar from Paradigm Sports released a notice that said a return was anticipated. Not to mention, the Irishman is expected to bounce back in full force from his injury.

After a successful surgery that lasted around three hours, McGregor and his team will want to get back to recovery. Even if the fourth fight with Poirier falls through, there are several notable names against who he can square off against.
