Last December, Colby Covington was part of one of the best welterweight title fights against Kamaru Usman. Although he lost the fight, Covington put on an impressive performance. Since his loss, Covington gave his first interview on ESPN’s Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show. Right off the bat, Covington lashed out at the journalists who were covering the event.

Covington claimed that the journalists failed to look at the fight objectively. He told Helwani ” I’ve been sitting back Ariel and no one has been analysing the fight objectively and calling it fair right down the middle.”  He went a step ahead to explain that he was not referring to Ariel Helwani and also praised Helwani for his achievements.

” I’m talking about these other so-called MMA journalists. These aren’t even journalists that actually got their journalism degrees like the great Stephen A. Smith but these are so-called MMA journalists with their Youtube channels. They are in their mom’s basement, they are eating Cheetos and  they can’t call this fight fair.”

In another interview with ScoreMMA, Colby Covington supported Stephen A Smith for giving his honest opinion on Conor McGregor vs Donald Cerrone. He also felt that Joe Rogan should not have insulted Smith for giving his opinion.

“He is a smart guy who calls it fair down the middle. But he also just gives his opinion. I got to respect Stephen A Smith. I don’t feel Joe Rogan should have came out and said hey you can’t have an opinon. “

What followed next was a breakdown of the fight round by round from Colby Covington’s perspective. He proceeded to state how easily he won the rounds, how Usman faked the groin shots and eye pokes and finally the trashing of the referee Marc Goddard.

When asked about the hiatus from the media, Covington said that he took a break because he wanted to see how people and journalists would react to the fight. He suggested that journalists need to put their feelings aside and talk about the facts and figures instead. The release of his corner’s audio during the fight also upset him.

Colby Covington is one of the top contenders in the UFC. Considering all the controversy surrounding their first fight, he makes a solid case for a rematch against Usman. Whether he receives an immediate rematch is a different case, since Jorge Masvidal is likely to be next in line for the title shot. As of now, it appears that Colby Covington is fine sitting out for a while. After all, he will be needing that time to heal completely.
