Edson Barboza earned a dominant decision win over top prospect Makwan Amirkhani in the co-main event for UFC Fight Island 5. The Brazilian striker mounted damaging offense from the early stages of the fight and dictated the range of the octagon. Not to mention, he knocked down ‘Mr. Finland’ frequently throughout the three-round contest.

Edson Barboza looked as sharp as ever, and he showed that he could provide effective overall variation with his strikes. From shovel hooks and step-in body kicks to a persistent jab, Edson put the division on notice. What’s more, the 21-9 fighter called his shot at a top five opponent after his dominant win in his newly adopted home at featherweight.

Despite the massive co-main event victory, Edson Barboza has some work to do in order to reach a title shot. He has gone 2-5 in his last seven outings and is 1-1 in the featherweight. Although his losses have come to exclusively the best fighters in the world, he will probably need a few more wins.

There are plenty of favorable match-ups available for Edson Barboza at 145-pounds before he can reach the upper echelon. He will still take away plenty of confidence from his most recent win over Amirkhani, who is a game contender.
