Former UFC Middleweight champion Robert Whittaker spoke to the media pre-fight ahead of his scheduled bout with Darren Till. The two are set to scrap in the Flash Forum at Yas Fight Island in what will be the final event. Not to mention, the fight itself has significance in the division, with the winner on the cusp of title contention.

The perennial optimist in Whittaker was in high spirits going into this crucial fight in his career. He is coming off a loss to Israel Adesanya that saw him drop his championship strap. Moreover, he appeared to be well adjusted to the new environment that would surround him.

The Reaper’ was clear that the fight was an opportunity to showcase his skills and that he wasn’t dwelling on the past. Speaking to the media via MMA Junkie, he touched upon his mindset, entering the cage in Abu Dhabi.

“People view me as a top contender because I am a top contender. I am one of the best in the world. I’m still only 29, I think a lot of people forget that as well. So I have enough time to walk away from the game, train skillsets, and come back at a later time.”

The former champion remains one of the divisional elites despite his devastating loss back at UFC 243. Darren Till offers a new stylistic puzzle given his unorthodox step-in stand-up game that has brought him success.

“Honestly the world is my oyster where I am sitting. I guess my biggest thing is, I want to enjoy it and earn a living. As a team and as a family we’re doing it together. So, gotta be happy with that.”

The main event match on Yas Island is sure to be fireworks as both striking elites are known to love a scrap. Additionally, given the high stakes for the winner, the 185-pounders are sure to leave it all on the line inside the arena.
