“I Couldn’t Relax”- Darren Till Opens Up On ‘Draining’ Weight Cut Problems

UFC Middleweight Darren Till spoke to Aaron Bronsteter via TSN and gave some candid insight into his grueling fight camps of the past. ‘The Gorilla’ is set to face-off in the headlining feature at Yas Fight Island against Robert Whittaker. Moreover, the fight marks his second bout at Middleweight and thus signifies a smoother weight cut than before.

The Englishman was a former Welterweight contender and title challenger in the 170-pound weight division. Given his big stature for the weight-class, he struggled to make the limit on multiple occasions. Not to mention, the move up to the 185-pound division has helped Till bounce back into title contention.

Darren Till spills the beans

The Liverpool, England native is known for his candid nature when talking about his mindset ahead of a fight. His scrap against ‘The Reaper’ is an extremely high-stakes affair with implications of lucrative opportunities going forward. ‘The Gorilla‘ took a step back and lamented on his past struggles that played in part in his move to Middleweight.

“It’s just a weight off the mind, it wasn’t even about the questions, in the end, it was about myself. I was waking up weeks out from the fight camp and it was just about cutting weight. Nothing was about the fight no more. Fight week was the same, I couldn’t relax. It was up-train, up-train, eat, train, train and it was just so draining on my body and on my mind.”

The 18-2-1 fighter no longer concerns himself with factors unrelated to his performance inside the cage. He expressed a sense of relief at being able to focus solely on his training and expansion of this skill-set.

“Since then it has become a huge weight off my mind. The last two fights that was what it was about, making weight. It wasn’t even about the fight no more. It was like ‘Okay, I’ve made weight, oh sh** I have to fight one of the best guys in the world’. It was madness.”

A victory over Robert Whittaker will mark a likely title shot for the undisputed gold strap. Chiefly, the win over Kelvin Gastelum bolstered his profile in the division and enabled him to attain better opportunities. MMA fans wait with labored anticipation to see the development of one of the most exciting divisions in the organization.
