Flyweight Cynthia Calvillo picked up a unanimous decision victory over Jessica Eye in the main event for UFC Fight Night. The fight took place in the Apex facility where Calvillo was dominant throughout the fight. She just beat the number one contender in the Flyweight division in Jessica Eye. This made her move up in the division quite significant.

Cynthia Calvillo went 4 for 7 in her Takedown attempts and clocked in almost 8 minutes of control time. Although there were instances where the finish was in sight, ‘Evil Eye’ defended herself on the ground. Calvillo also outstruck Eye 137 to 97, further cementing a powerful performance.

The lead up to the fight was not without controversy. Jessica Eye missed weight once again and looked debilitated on the scale. It appeared that she was withdrawing from the bout, however; she confirmed that she would indeed fight via Instagram.

Cynthia Calvillo: “She magically took 3 pounds off? I don’t think so”

Calvillo claimed that her team received a text message from Eye’s coach 30 mins before the scheduled weigh-in. According to Calvillo, Eye was supposed to weigh in at 129.6 pounds per Eye’s coaching staff. However, ‘Evil Eye’ would officially weigh in at 126.25 pounds.

The allegations against Eye are that she held the towel during the official weigh-in. Chiefly being the reason for going over by only 0.25 pounds.

“She went into this fight a lot heavier than I did. Not only did I move up a weight class, but I got somebody who was a Bantamweight going in there fighting a flyweight.”

This incident harkens back to the infamous ‘Towel gate’ at UFC 210.

Similar allegations were brought against Daniel Cormier ahead of his title bout with Anthony Johnson. Cormier denied any intentional involvement in the controversy. However, it is widely believed that Towel grabbing is a maneuver used to manipulate the scale slightly.

Calvillo is now well-positioned in the women’s 125-pound division.

“I feel like this is where I belong. I felt a little more depleted and a lot lighter, I felt like I was being pushed around when I was fighting at strawweight. At Flyweight I feel solid, I feel like I can sit down. I need to bring my feet along with my punches so I can make my striking more significant. I started picking it up more in the fifth round.

“I’m confident in myself when I go in there. It’s a big learning lesson but I learned a lot about myself, so it’s awesome.”

It remains to be seen whether Cynthia Calvillo can make a quick run at the 125-pound belt. Where does she go from here after a dominant win?
