UFC Fight Night: Tyron Woodley vs Gilbert Burns Pays Heartfelt Tributes To George Floyd

The UFC main card broadcast paid tribute to George Floyd, who was a victim of police brutality. The UFC Vegas card also dedicated the night’s event to ringside physician Dr. Albert Capanna.

A white Minneapolis police office senselessly killed George Floyd early on the morning of the 25. A video surfaced of the police officer kneeling over Floyd’s neck for over 8 mins. Other police officers simply stood as aggravated bystanders begged them to release the man lying deceased on the pavement.

Protests erupted across the U.S after the murder. It sparked national outrage, following the two other high-profile killings of African American men in recent months.

The issue is an addition to the racially motivated violence that has seemingly become integrated within USA’s culture. What began as a debate into systemic racism has now led to all-out violent countrywide protests.

Protestors ran amok in the days following this event, ransacking stores and public property. The National Guard has been called in following stirring protests in Minneapolis.

UFC: Stay Strong

The UFC has integrated awareness in the form of tributes in the past as well. For instance, during the Vegas shooting in 2017, The UFC began the ‘Vegas Strong’ campaign that served to help the local community. As the company has its infrastructure in Vegas, the UFC has been heavily involved in its community.

The death of George Floyd has rocked the nation as hundreds of protestors spill onto the streets. It is good to see the UFC doing its due diligence by paying tribute, as it is one of the biggest live sports to return.

The organization also paid tribute to former NSAC ringside physician Dr. Albert Capanna, who recently passed away. The neurosurgery specialist had a significant tenure with the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
