WATCH: Mackenzie Dern Imitates Valerie Loureda’s Iconic Post-Fight Celebration After Submission Win Over Nina Nunes at UFC Fight Night

UFC strawweight fighter Mackenzie Dern pulled off a dominant submission win over number five ranked fighter, Nina Nunes. The Brazilian grappling ace made sure her ground game would trump that of Nunes as she secured a tight first-round armbar. Nunes had no choice but to tap despite there being merely 10 seconds left on the clock.

Nina Nunes was returning to the octagon after a long lay-off and had just given birth in the interim period. However, she was well prepared for the fight and was confident that her striking would pull her through. But, it wasn’t to be as Dern proved once again she’s on a serious run towards the UFC title.

Following her first-round submission win, Mackenzie Dern pulled off an iconic celebration as an ode to Valerie Loureda. ‘Master’ Loureda is coming in hot in the MMA news cycle as she recently had a fight booked against Hannah Guy. Dern’s celebration inside the octagon has brought more attention to her, and she’s certainly a fan favorite fighter.

Ben Askren lauds Mackenzie Dern

‘Funky’ Ben Askren who retired from the UFC late in 2019 continues to be a major presence in the world of social media. Askren took to Twitter and hailed Mackenzie Dern for the turnaround she’s made since losing to Amanda Ribas. She’s gone on a four-fight tear through the division with three submissions win in that streak.

Dern is knocking on the door of a title shot and could very well be just one fight away from being able to contest for gold. She’s shown herself to be more than capable on the ground with an ever-developing striking game. Beating the number five ranked fighter will put her within jumping distance of a UFC title shot.

Chiefly, Mackenzie Dern entered the UFC back in March 2018 with a lot of hype riding behind her. But, the brutal beat down at the hands of Amanda Ribas made fans second guess her abilities as an elite fighter. However, looking at the names she’s scalped recently, the strawweight definitely has a new player.
