The UFC has tasked welterweights Warlley Alves and Jeremiah Wells with a preliminary card assignment for UFC Vegas 30. The aforementioned scrap is a classic ‘veteran vs newcomer’ match-up as Wells gears up for his UFC debut. On the other hand, Alves is a veteran in every sense of the word, having faced stiff competition since 2014.

As it stands, the bout has no implication for the welterweight title landscape going forward. The upper echelon of the division is stacked and Kamaru Usman has no shortage of opponents vying for his title. However, the fight will serve as a good litmus test to see who can inch closer towards contention.

UFC Vegas 30: Warlley Alves vs Jeremiah Wells

Alves is no stranger to facing stiff competition. He encountered fighters like Colby Covington and Kamaru Usman during their come-up. In fact, Alves submitted ‘Chaos’ Covington via guillotine choke, thus proving that he’s a game contender in the division. He’s coming off a TKO win over rising prospect Mounir Lazzez and will want to build off his success.

Warlley Alves is solid no matter where the fight goes and he’s able to use inventive angles to push the pace forward. Not to mention, the Brazilian is as durable as they come, having only been stopped twice in 18 fights. He’ll look to use his well-rounded skill set to send another prospect to the back of the line and begin a run towards the top.

Jeremiah Wells: Making his mark

Jeremiah Wells comes into the promotion on the strength of two straight stoppage wins at the CFFC organization. The 8-2-1 prospect has a lot of star qualities that could potentially make him a household name if he gets on a streak. The general consensus is that Wells has entered the UFC at the right time and will take advantage of his prime years.

Jeremiah’s toughness and willingness to trade in the pocket are two things that could make him a ‘performance bonus’ machine. He’s well-sized for the division and uses drag control against the cage to extremely effective measure. However, he’ll have to be wary of Alves’s closed guard as the Brazilian is adept at reversals.
