UFC middleweight Jared Cannonier won a unanimous decision over Kelvin Gastelum in the main event at UFC Vegas 34. ‘The Killa Gorilla’ fought through some adversity as Gastelum refused to go down without a fair fight. Cannonier managed to land the effective strikes and was the more devastating striker throughout the duration of 25 minutes.

The performance was critical to Cannonier’s career as he suffered an unfortunate loss to Robert Whittaker in his last fight. However, the top 3 ranked middleweight is 4-1 since moving to the weight class and is closing in on a title shot. Speaking to Daniel Cormier after the fight, Cannonier revealed the reason why he would be looking to secure a fight again soon.

“I’m broke so I need to fight. Hopefully, I get that title shot. The right name might make me say yes.”

Chiefly, it’s both concerning and alarming that a top-ranked fighter in the UFC needs to return to action for money. In such a case, Cannonier will want to secure a title shot against Israel Adesanya next so he can be assured of a large paycheck. Not to mention, ‘Izzy’ has expressed an interest to fight Cannonier and it would be a viable fight.

Is a championship opportunity next for Jared Cannonier?

The name Robert Whittaker is one that Jared Cannonier won’t be too fond of right about now. Not only did ‘The Reaper’ defeat Cannonier, but he also is in line to fight for the title next. Whittaker has used a chainsaw to hack through the divisional contenders and he’s now the clear number one contender.

This significantly delays Cannonier’s prospects of fighting Israel Adesanya sometime this year. Furthermore, Adesanya vs Whittaker 2 is indefinitely pushed back for some time in 2022 thus delaying the match-up further. If everything lines up perfectly, Jared Cannonier could fight for this title around this time next year.

However, it’s evident that fiscal constraints will more than likely force Jared Cannonier to fight someone else in the meanwhile. The only name that makes sense is Paulo Costa. Both men were scheduled to fight each other and it’s the fight that will most likely be booked next.
